Reflections From My Desk: Women’s History Month

by pbergman 28. March 2012 13:32

It seems very appropriate as we near the end of March, Women’s History Month, that I will become the first woman ever, in 125 years to become chairman of the Jewelers Board Trade!

As I sit here at my desk, I take a moment to reflect on some of the wonderful women mentors I have had over the years in the jewelry industry. Helene Fortunoff who built a family and a business at the same time and convinced me to become president of the Women’s Jewelry Association (a post she held while she was doing all the above), Peggy Kirby, the first woman vice-president of Findlay Fine Jewelry, who at 95 is still attending WJA meetings and travelling all over the world, Anna Martin, vice-president of Standard Charter Bank, who succeeded me as president of WJA and who taught me the fine art of networking and introduced me to the global world of jewelry, Marjorie Fortgang who showed me how to build & keep relationships in our industry and of course my mother who taught me to make the most out of everyday! Also collectively, the women of WJA whose varied interests and accomplishments, were an essential component of my growth as a leader. Of course, I have had many special male mentors but as they say in WJA, “Women Rock”.
