Where did the summer go!

by pbergman 8. September 2008 16:48

My summer actually started on Memorial Day when I flew to Las Vegas to spend 12 days at the jewelry trade show being held there. 12 days in Vegas! Can you imagine? I managed to mix a little fun in with a lot of work. Business was certainly off from last year. Everyone seemed a hesitant to buy inventory for their stores. I guess everyone was concerned about the economy, rising gas prices and precious metal prices. Thank goodness people are still getting married and buying engagement rings even if the price points are a little lower. Our attainable platinum pieces did quite well and the same for palladium product. As for the fun- I am now on the board of directors of the Diamond Empowerment along with Russell Simmons. Russell was the keynote speaker at JCk show in Vegas. He was a hit! Everyone enjoyed him. We had a large cocktail party where Russell met some of our industry leaders. Very fun. Got to see the Cher show and loved it. Came home exhausted!

June- Busy trying to fill all the orders we took at the show and eagerly looking forward to summer vacation

July- Ah! Two weeks of vacation. Finally!-Flew to Los Angeles to visit my two year old grandchild and the drove down to Mexico to a marvelous health ranch with my husband,daughter,son-in-law,grandson and son and daughter-in-law. Three generations vacationing together and it was great. Everyone did their own thing! Very relaxing.

Left the ranch and spent two days in Santa Monica and then back to Las Vegas for 3 days. No work just play! Tried different restaurants and saw some shows. It was 110 degrees! Couldn’t do much during the day except sit in the pool.

Mid July flew to Chicago to be part of a fact finding committee to discuss the possibility of a new trade show in March at Navy Pier. I think it is a go.

Flew home and immediately left for the Hamptons. Would you believe I lived in New York and had never been to the Hamptons. We were invited out for the weekend to attend three major events. Friday night was VH1 Save The Music hosted by Morris & Jaci Reid (Jaci is also a board member of DEF). Neo & Solange performed. A beautiful night! Saturday was Russell’s Simmons party for his ART FOR LIFE foundation. 750 of his nearest & dearest had dinner on his lawn and an auction at the dinner helped raise a lot of money for the cause. Met the governor of New York, Mr. Patterson. Many celebrities. The color for the evening was lavender. Everyone looked beautiful and the lavender tablecloths and fans certainly added to the décor. Most fun was the Ben & Jerry truck that was opened for business all night. Ice cream sundaes anytime you wished. Yum! Sunday Jason Binn had a beach party for his company Niche Media. All blue & white. The beach looked like an island in Greece.

Back to New York & we get ready for the New York Jewelry show which took place at the Javits center the end of July. Another quiet show. Looks like the economy is still in the doldrums. Lot’s of parties during the show. Women’s Jewelry Association had a big dinner and silent auction celebrating their 25th anniversary. They honored all the past Hall of Fame winners including yours truly and also recognized Sybil Yurman and Steven Kaiser for their contributions to the industry. Great night! Tuesday night the American Gem Society had their Circle of Distinction dinner at the Rainbow room where they honored my good friend Anna Martin of ABN Amro bank. It was fun to see all my colleagues. Also had a meeting with Madeline Albright’s chief of staff. It seems Madeline is going to write a book about how her famous pin collection affected historic events during her term as Secretary of State. She is also planning a big launch in New York of the book along with the collection and they wanted my advice on how to go about it.

August - Well with only three days of recuperation I was off to the next trade show. The Independent Jewelers show (IJO Show) in Philadelphia. Spirits were much higher at this show and more retailers seemed in a buying mood. Philadelphia turned out to be an interesting town with lots of great restaurants and coming from New York that is a compliment.

Back to the office for two days and then on to Nantucket where we met my daughter, son-in-law and grandsons for a sailing weekend in Nantucket. The weather was beautiful and we were able to stay on the boat and listen to the Boston Pops perform on the breach with a guest appearance by Joel Grey.

Back home to New York where the most exciting invitation awaited us. Please join PENELOPE CRUZ, JAVIER BARDEM And PATRICIA CLARKSON for the premier showing of their movie VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA in New York to be followed by a private dinner after the showing at the Plaza Athena Hotel in New York. Of course I accepted! The evening was co-sponsored by the Diamond Information Center and the Sherry Industry of Spain. Needless to say the photographer did not snap our picture as we walked down the red carpet but they certainly snapped all the stars that were there including Katie Couric, John Tuturro, Russell Simmons and Harvey Weinstein. The movie, written by Woody Allen was enjoyable and the scenes of Barcelona were extraordinary as were Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. What a perfect way to end what turned out to be a very exciting summer.

September - I am now awaiting the arrival of our new 2008-2009 catalogue which should be arriving from the printer any day now.  I am very excited about it because instead of stock photos we have used actual photos of LIFE & LOVE events from our family. Since we feel we are all about our relationships with our customers we thought it would be fun to share our family relationships with them. Also we worked closely with the Platinum Guild to bring more attainable platinum product to our customers.

What’s next—I am off to Bangkok and Hong Kong to attend the trade shows there. It will be fun to be someone who walks around rather than someone who sits in a booth all day. I am looking forward to sharing with you the trends that I find and my analysis of what’s going on in the industry on an international level.
