Hi Phyllis!

Comments about what makes a relationship work, in no particular order as they're all critically important:

1) Trust
2) Don't sweat the little stuff--it really doesn't matter if he/she leaves the cap off the toothpaste; if it bugs you, put it back on. Or get a house with enough bathrooms that you don't have to look at it.
3) Common values and goals--AND being on the same page about how and when to get there
4) Give each other space and room to be individuals
5) If a commitment is there, the absence of a piece of paper won't take it away; if the commitment isn't there, the presence of a piece of paper won't make a difference.
6) Your own checking account and credit cards, but an agreement to each be fiscally responsible.
7) Acceptance of each other's quirks--if you're trying that hard to change the person, you're with the wrong person.
8) Fight about what you're fighting about. If you're fighting about a couch, it should really be about the relative merits of sectional vs loveseat in your living room--it should not be a fight that's really about who's in control disguised as a fight about furniture.
